We've been waiting months at my dealership for our first batch of the new Mustangs to drop. In that time, I've read of how soft, how slow, how watered down the new pony has become. I've seen criticism of its fusion-coupe design and softer ride, and had let my expectations come down a few notches.

But then I saw it, the Batmobile. I could sit here and drop superlatives all morning about the looks and presence, but that would be underselling just how awesome this vehicle drives. It may have lost a hair of speed on a track, but in its natural environment, the street, this thing thrives. The long hood, hunkered stance, and driving position are all improvements over the old 'stang. Ford has a great next-gen platform to tweak and improve over the next few years. Oh, and line lock seems like it would be pretty cool if it were ever engaged in an empty parking lot.

Designer said that, during the "clean sheet" process, they took off all the extra little design cues one by one and left them off it still looked like a Mustang without it.

This is an excellent way to design a car.

This reminds me of a mid 2000's BMW an old forum mate of mine had. He took his 3 series to an aftermarket painter and said he wanted it so black "people [would] be surprised when Vader doesn't step out"

Fool should've just waited for this. It's screaming Imperial March

Seriously, when I first saw it last night, it was dark outside and I was walking by a service bay and this this is just sitting there in a bay under a bright light with the front LEDs lit up. Straight up batmobile/Darth Vader vibe.

Love this picture. I'm not at all a "Mustang Guy", but I want one of these badly. Living in the Pacific NW means that it won't be all that common, too, which is a bonus.

That's an interesting approach. After a few refreshes, car designs tend to get pretty busy. The 370Z is one of the worst offenders in my opinion, if you compare it to the original 350Z, which is essentially the same platform.

And Ford drops the ball on the Mustang again. This model is going to be thrown in with the square 80's Mustang garbage bin.

I'm not really sure if it will be. At first I didn't like the look, then I saw one on the road a few weeks ago and it was one of the most stunning cars I've ever seen. It looked better than the Ferrari that was right next to it.

I mean, to each his own, but I don't think it will be even remotely thrown in the same bin as the 80s models. At least not in terms of looks.

A truly clean design overall, no more fake side scoops. Only things they forgot was to paint the side skirts, leave the complete rear lower diffuser black, and offer a power moonroof.

Why would you think it won't be all that uncommon? The LARGEST Mustang show in the country takes place in Bellevue every year 3rd weekend of July at Bellevue CC. I live over in Port Angeles and there are Mustangs all over and our population for two counties here is equal to about the number of people living on Queen Anne hill.

There are a lot of Mustangs around here...10's of 1000's.

Must be a Chevy guy!!!! haha

I live about a mile from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. I've been seeing these on the road all Summer. They look better every time I see one. So many colors that look good it would be hard to pick one. I would have to go with the orange myself. Or the green, maybe the blue. Looking forward to people getting them and doing some mod's.

I am a Ford guy, owned three Mustangs. This one by far is the nicest looking one.

11/06/2014 at 15:59

Kinja'd!!!0

In my perspective, the issue comes from the fact that they seem to have sacrificed style and performance for... no idea but it obviously wasn't worth it. The past Mustang actually had some awesome performance specs and could go toe-to-toe with a Camaro, winning in drag and losing in track. Now it's BARELY winning in drag and it's UNDENIABLY losing in track to what is considered to be a heavier, less powered, Zeta platformed (aka slow) car that's expected to improve ALL OF THAT in the next year. Ford really bombed this one and quite frankly, I've found much praise overrated for the last gen but I still thought it was a cool car. This gen? I don't see how ANYONE could praise this thing.

This is definitely a step up over the angle-back and the first retro attempt. I'd go so far as to say it's #2 to the original's #1. The fact it fits with the rest of the Ford lineup now is actually a bonus — it's a true halo car, rather than an oddball throwback.

'80s Mustangs rock. Fox body ftw. It was IMHO the closest Ford has come to the original mustang as far as the idea of a pony car for everyone. Low prices multiple options and body styles.

You know the First Mustang I ever drove was a 2015 Ecoboost, I went to an event in Tysons Corner VA, and honestly I don't understand the hate.

It's Beautiful, the only guys I hear complaining are the "every mustang must look like it came out of the 60's" diehards. Honestly I loved the Awkward years of the Mustang sans the Mustang II. I loved the 80's Hatchstang, and the Bubbly 93 Stang (almost bought one).

This one is going to change how the world sees these cars, they're evolving. They have to in order to stay relevant. Just watch, the Camaro and the Challenger will be forced to follow as they always have.
